Beaverton named as One of the Best Places in America to Raise Kids

Beaverton was named in BusinessWeek magazine's fourth annual survey as one of the best places in the country to raise children and the top community in Oregon. Oregon runners-up in the magazine's rankings were Corvallis and Eugene.

"I'm excited and proud but not surprised," said Mayor Denny Doyle. "The acknowledgment underscores the excellence of our park and school districts and the quality of our city services."

Beaverton was acknowledged for family friendly amenities that include a park located within a half-mile of every resident, a 25-mile network of bike paths, nearby ski slopes, beaches and shopping areas. The community's highly-regarded public and private schools were recognized for sending students to top-ranked universities as well.

Beaverton police play major role in counterfeit bust in Los Angeles

During August 2008, the Beaverton Police Department began a cooperative effort with the FBI Portland Office to enforce Intellectual Property Rights Laws.

The enforcement efforts focused on sources and suppliers of counterfeit merchandise.

In September 2008, a search warrant was served on a major supplier of counterfeit merchandise in the Portland-metro area. That search warrant resulted in the seizure of counterfeit merchandise and the development of valuable investigative information.

Investigators in Oregon then formed a partnership with investigators from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and investigative consultants to target sources and suppliers of counterfeit merchandise in Oregon and California.

Illegal movers busted in local sting

This is a press release courtesy of the Beaverton Police Department

In an effort to ‘crack down' on unlicensed and uninsured moving operations, the Oregon Department of Transportation partnered with Beaverton Police Department on an undercover enforcement operation. Consumer protection was a key goal of the operation.

Illegal household goods movers often advertise on web sites or bulletin boards offering to help people with a move for a fee. Many consumers don't realize that these "companies" don't have legal operating authority or insurance and in some cases, safe vehicles and drivers. Consumers who choose an unlicensed mover, whether intentionally or unintentionally, may have little or no recourse for loss or damage to their property, may be charged higher than normal fees, and may be at higher risk for property or identity theft.
