Extra police patrols for Big Game

BEAVERTON, Ore. – Beaverton police will have extra patrols out Sunday, and some may include media ride-alongs.

"Super Bowl Sunday is one of America's biggest and most entertaining national sporting events as friends and families gather to watch the big game," said a Beaverton Police Department release Sunday. "Yet, it also has become one of the nation's most dangerous days on the roadway due to impaired driving."

On Sunday, Feb. 7, the Beaverton Police Department will be participating in what's known as "High Visibility Enforcement DUII detail." This detail is part of a national "Fans Don't Let Fans Drive Drunk" campaign.

"The goal," reports the release, "is to raise awareness about the importance of driving sober so we can save lives."

To help avoid being pulled over, Beaverton police suggest:

Pedestrian struck in crosswalk by driver in Aloha

ALOHA, Ore. -- A woman who was struck by a car while using a crosswalk Thursday in Aloha is expected to survive her injuries.

Renee Hoskins, 60, was crossing at the intersection of SW Baseline Road near SW Lisa Lane when she was struck by Betty Dobbie, 86. All of this was seen by a Washington County Sheriff's Deputy who was traveling east on SW Baseline Road at the time. He saw Hoskins start to cross, and according to police officials, the deputy became concerned because he noticed Hoskins was wearking dark clothes. Adding to the fact that it was night and raining, he knew it might be hard for drivers to see Hoskins.

The deputy was right.

Neighbors' sewage being pumped in Beaverton family's home

BEAVERTON, Ore. -- Twice in the last month, the Mendoza family of Beaverton has been dealing with damage to their home from inches of water flooding their basement bedrooms, bathroom and kitchen.

All of the damage is making Xavier Mendoza get all of his family's belongings off the floor.

“So we just kind of try to elevate everything as much as we could," Mendoza said.

The family even paid a plumbing company to snake a camera down their drain.

Beaverton sex offender captured in Panama

BEAVERTON, Ore. -- Philip Leland Riley is finally under arrest.

Riley, 68, had been arrested in November of 2008 after the Beaverton Police Department was called to investigate a sex abuse allegation at the YMCA in Beaverton. A young juvenile male had reported to his mother he'd been sexually assaulted by an older white male while in the facility's shower.

Detectives responded and the resulting investigation led Riley's arrest. Riley was lodged at the Washington County Jail where he posted bail and subsequently fled the state to avoid prosecution.

Numerous attempts were made to locate Riley, however, these attempts proved unsuccessful. It was later believed Riley had left the United States. Beaverton detectives sought the help of the FBI and the United States Attorney's Office where a Federal fugitive warrant was issued and a fugitive investigation began.

On Oct. 10, 2009, America's Most Wanted aired a show outlining the case and requested the public's assistance.

Dalrymple won't seek re-election to city council spot

Beaverton city councilor Bruce Dalrymple announced he will not run for re-election to Beaverton City Council position No. 1.

Dalrymple has served on the Beaverton City Council since March 20, 2006. During that time he also served as council liaison to the Beaverton Arts Commission, Budget Committee, Beaverton Committee for Citizen Involvement, the Human Rights Advisory Commission and the Library Advisory Board. His current term runs through Dec. 31, 2010.

"After making this difficult decision, which was based on my desire to spend more time with my family and in pursuit of private business interests, I chose to get the word out as quickly as possible," Dalrymple said.

"Bruce has given the citizens of Beaverton exemplary service as a City Councilor," said Beaverton Mayor Denny Doyle. "While I'm disappointed that he will not be running again for Council, I'm looking forward to working with him over the next year to continue to improve Beaverton. I'm confident that he will always be actively involved in our community."

WES hits 1-year mark

Tuesday marked the first anniversary of TriMet's Westside Express Service (WES) that connects Tualatin, Wilsonville, Tigard and Beaverton.

According to TriMet, 42 percent of the line's riders previously drove to their destinations.

Still, ridership on the WES isn't growing as fast as initial projections had estimated. Transit leaders blame the economy, saying high unemployment has resulted in fewer commuters.
