Southridge girls down Jesuit 47-38 for state title

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Dominique Johnson was only half-joking when she described the scene in the Southridge locker room at halftime of the state title game, with the Skyhawks trailing Jesuit 26 to 16.

"A bunch of yelling and screaming," she laughed.

And what was said?

"This is the championship," she said. "We need to bring some intensity out there."

However it went behind closed doors, it worked.

Johnson scored 11 points, including a key 3-pointer in the final quarter, and third-ranked Southridge came from behind to beat fourth-ranked Jesuit 47-38 on Saturday in the OSAA Class 6A girls state championship game.

The Skyhawks (26-2) trailed by as many as 12 points but rallied in the fourth quarter, going up 41 to 35 on Johnson's 3-pointer with 3:54 to go.

Elizabeth Brenner had 12 points and eight rebounds for the Crusaders (22-7), who were unable to overcome the late momentum shift for Southridge.

Southridge hits free throws, rallies to knock off Oregon City

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Southridge High School girls basketball team hit 7-10 from the free-throw line in the final 3:03 Friday and outscored Oregon City by 11 points in the fourth quarter to rally for a 55-47 win against the No. 1-ranked Pioneers in the semifinals of the OSAA Class 6A girls basketball state tournament at the Rose Garden.

The Skyhawks (25-2) will take on No. 4-ranked Jesuit (22-6), which defeated No. 2-ranked South Eugene 61-46, in Saturday's 7 p.m. state championship game.

Southridge, ranked No. 3 in the state, trailed much of the game, although the Pioneers were never able to pull away. The Pioneers held a 35-32 lead at the end of the third quarter before the Skyhawks took control, thanks in large part to an Oregon City scoring drought that lasted for more than three minutes. Oregon City's Brittany Knighton hit a shot with 5:39 to play to give the Pioneers a 40-39 lead. That was the last time the Pioneers would have the advantage because the Pioneers didn't score again until the 2:08 mark when Ashleigh Anderson hit 1-2 from the foul line.

Jesuit pounds Lincoln, heads to state title game

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Jesuit just keeps rolling.

The top-ranked Crusaders earned their second blowout win of the OSAA Class 6A boys state basketball tournament Friday with a decisive 66-41 semifinals win against Lincoln at the Rose Garden. A day earlier, the Crusaders (25-2) blew out No. 7-ranked Newberg 74-36. Friday's win against the Cardinals (21-7) put the Crusaders back in Saturday's state title game for the second straight season.

Even though Jesuit's 6-foot-9 junior post Kyle Wiltjer found himself in foul trouble with two fouls in the opening quarter, the Crusaders jumped out to a 16-8 lead after the first quarter. A three-pointer by Jesuit's Jeff Elorriaga with 4:54 to play boosted the Jesuit lead to 26-12 and the Crusaders were off and rolling.

Wiltjer's 13 points leads Crusaders in rout of Newberg

PORTLAND, Ore. - Junior Kyle Wilter scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead top-ranked Jesuit to an easy 74-36 win Thursday against No. 7-ranked Newberg in the quarterfinals of the OSAA Class 6A boys state basketball tournament.

The defeding state champion Crusaders (24-2) dominated the Tigers (19-7) in nearly every facet of the game. The Crusaders outscored Newberg 17-3 in points off turnovers, points in the paint (36-14), second-chance points (19-4) and bench points (27-3). The Crusaders also limited Newberg to shooting 10-45 (22 percent) from the field.

"Our defense is what fueled our offense," said the 6-foot-9 Wiltjer. "When we got stops, we got easy baskets and then turned that into a lead and then we didn't look back from there."

Wiltjer did most of his damage in the first half. He converted a three-point play with 2:52 to play in the first quarter to give the Crusaders an 11-5 lead. Wiltjer's rebound and basket with 1:22 to play boosted Jesuit's lead to 13-5.

Southridge fends off Tigard in quarterfinals of state tourney

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Southridge High School girls basketball team limited Tigard to 14 points through the first three quarters Wednesday and held on for a 44-32 win in the quarterfinals of the OSAA Class 6A girls basketball state tournament at the Rose Garden.

Neither team's offense shined, particularly in the first half, during the game. The Tigard offense was limited to 10 first-half points on 3-10 (30 percent) shooting. Meanwhile, Southridge wasn't much better, hitting 8-21 (38 percent) from the field in the opening half. Still, the Skyhawks held a 21-10 halftime lead.

Tigard's Kelsey Kaelin hit a jumper with 4:28 to play in the third quarter to pull the Tigers within 21-12, but Tigard scored just two points during the rest of the quarter as Southridge held a 28-14 lead to start the fourth quarter.

Tigard outscored Southridge 18-16 in the final quarter, but it wasn't enough.

Senior guard Dominique Johnson scored a game-high 15 points on 5-8 shooting from the field for the Skyhawks. Johnson also added three assists and four steals. Junior guard Allison Greene added 12 points, hitting 8-10 (80 percent) on free throws.

Extra police patrols for Big Game

BEAVERTON, Ore. – Beaverton police will have extra patrols out Sunday, and some may include media ride-alongs.

"Super Bowl Sunday is one of America's biggest and most entertaining national sporting events as friends and families gather to watch the big game," said a Beaverton Police Department release Sunday. "Yet, it also has become one of the nation's most dangerous days on the roadway due to impaired driving."

On Sunday, Feb. 7, the Beaverton Police Department will be participating in what's known as "High Visibility Enforcement DUII detail." This detail is part of a national "Fans Don't Let Fans Drive Drunk" campaign.

"The goal," reports the release, "is to raise awareness about the importance of driving sober so we can save lives."

To help avoid being pulled over, Beaverton police suggest:

With win, Beaverton's Ben Crane heads to Masters

At the end of a week dominated by accusations and consternation over square grooves generating more spin, perhaps it was only fitting that the Farmers Insurance Open came down to a wedge.

Ben Crane had a one-shot lead and stood 82 yards from the 18th hole, the traditional Sunday placement at Torrey Pines just over the water and below a ridge. Michael Sim had 88 yards, effectively the same shot, needing a birdie for hopes of a playoff.

Both used the conforming V-shaped grooves. And both shots spun too much.

The advantage went to Crane, for his ball stopped against the collar of the green allowing him to putt. He didn't do it very well, leaving himself 30 inches of bumpy green for par to capture his first victory in more than four years. He was surprised, only because he pledged not to keep score and didn't realize he had won until he was congratulated.

"Did I win?" Crane said to Ryuji Imada, a reaction more common on the "Price is Right" than the PGA Tour.

Hungry Howie's set to feed entire Hillsboro High School -- for free

In honor of Hillsboro High School's Class 5A state football championship it won this season, Hungry Howie's Pizza will bring pizza for the entire student body on Jan. 8.

Franchise owner Tom Bauer says he has put the free pizza offer out to all high schools in his store's delivery area -- the four Hillsboro High Schools plus Aloha and Westview -- that if one of the teams wins a state title, Hungry Howie's will feed the school. The standing challenge is just one of several programs Bauer has put in place to support both athletics and academics at local schools.

The pizza lunch will precede the school's 1:45 p.m. pep assembly to officially congratulate the football team and celebrate the victory that was 36 years in the making.
